چکیده

Poverty of the stimulus (POS) studies, as noted by Hawkins (2001), contribute to the development and understanding of the SLA process. So as to establish the operation of UG in L2 acquisition, White (2003) offers two conditions to be met. First, the construction investigated should be underrepresented by the L2 input and secondly, the syntactic property should not be derived from the L1. The present paper endeavours to contribute to the body of research on POS from the perspective of distributional syntax as classified by Schwartz and Sprouse (2000). The organization of this paper is as follows: Section 2 reviews the distributional properties of VPPs and VPCs in English. Section 3 offers a syntactic account of VPPs and VPCs within the framework of the Minimalist Program. Section 4 briefly reviews the above structures in Persian. The learnability problem associated with these constructions is discussed in section 5 followed by the methodology in section 6. Sections 7 and 8 present the results and discussion followed by some concluding remarks in section 9.

Distribution of Prodrop Syntactic Properties in L2 English of Persian Speakers

This study set out to investigate the distribution of the syntactic properties associatedwith the prodrop parameter by Persian-speaking L2 learners of English in an attemptto examine the (un)attainability of native-like knowledge and (in)accessibility of UGin adult SLA. To do so, 92 participants were assigned into different levels of L2knowledge based on their performances on the Oxford Placeme...

Task-Specific Artifacts of Parametric Properties in English as a Second Language Acquired by Persian-Speaking Learners

This experimental study investigated the learners’ integrative acquisition of obligatory overt subjects and subject-verb clause agreement in English as an L2. In L1 acquisition research, correlations between superficially unrelated linguistic phenomena are analyzed in terms of integrative effects. For instance, in English L1 acquisition, there is evidence for an integrative appearance of subjec...

L2 Learners’ English Prepositional-Phrase Processing with Consideration of L2 Proficiency and Word Familiarity: A mixed-effect Analysis

A considerable number of studies have hitherto examined how native speakers and second language (hereafter L1 and L2, respectively) learners of English process English prepositional phrases. It is usually thought that both L1 and L2 speakers have a preference for verb phrase modification (e.g., The boy broke the old window with a ball of snow.) over noun phrase modification (e.g., The boy broke...

Verb-Particle Constructions in Questions

In this paper, we investigate the behavior of verb-particle constructions in English questions. We present a small dataset that contains questions and verb-particle construction candidates. We demonstrate that there are significant differences in the distribution of WH-words, verbs and prepositions/particles in sentences that contain VPCs and sentences that contain only verb + prepositional phr...

The Role of Semantic Transparency in the Processing of Verb-particle Constructions by French-English Bilinguals

Verb-particle constructions (phrasal verbs) are a notoriously difficult aspect of English to acquire for second-language (L2) learners. This study was conducted to assess whether L2 English speakers would show sensitivity to the subtle semantic properties of these constructions, namely the gradations in semantic transparency of different verb-particle constructions (e.g., finish up vs. chew out...
